Picture Challenge: Introduction
RubyRedRose and I have agreed to do 52 drawing challenges. The goal of this is to improve our (mostly my) drawing skills. So the first week of the year we have our first challenge due. The theme of this weeks drawing was “introduction.”

I think this guy turned out ok. I would like to seen him colored but I am too afraid of messing him up to try it. He has a rapier in his right hand and a small crossbow in his left. That is a sad little crossbow. I know there are many in this world who could draw a better rapier than that but after drawing it, I am SO freaking proud of it. Just getting the hand to look right took forever.

If you can’t read what he is saying

“Hello, my name is Lausian Fleurspada.
I am here to rob you kind people
in a manor both provocative and dashing.”

Self critique:
It looks flat. I need to learn how to shade. If I do some day color it I think adding lights and darks will really improve it.
That left arm is sad it’s probably the weakest part of the picture. Truthfully, after spending the better part of an hour on the right hand I ran out of steam.
The anatomy is lost under the clothes. I think it looks ok, but that could be because I am the one who drew it. So I see the figure doodle underneath.
The drawing wasn’t scanned. Because the scanner is a fucktard.
I like the filigree. Between that and the right hand I am totally willing to sign my name to this.
He was supposed to have black hair but I chickened out when it came time to ink it.
Over all I think I did good. This is the picture I will compare my future drawings against to measure improvement.

If any one can give me tips on how to draw a hand crossbow pointed at the viewer let me know.

If the crossbow is being held out at arm's length, draw it bigger since it's closer. Think about the way the arm bends - most of it should be behind the hand in that posture. Vanishing point stuff takes a little getting used to..

Is he shooting from the hip, or holding it straight out?

Nit pick: It's "in a manner both provocative and dashing." Manor is a large house.

Art: I like the jacket/vest thing. The knot work/filigree is a nice touch. And the hair. The pose is good, but where the jacket cuts off, it looks like his legs aren't attached underneath. Note that I think his crotch should be about a the distance between his nose and hairline further up. The left hand (with the crossbow) is a bit small looking, but as ot_atma said, I think it's due to foreshortening. I like the face and the way his features are very angled. Also, yay the rapier isn't crooked. That's always a b** to do. I think the clothes need more wrinkles/folds. You can do that with shading when you color, but I like to do with the my linework. Um...other than adding a background, I think that's it. n_n

...is this a current DnD char?

I am hugely proud of the rapier hand.

He was inspired by a DnD book I was looking through. I saw a feat that let you have a hand cross bow in your off hand while you wield a rapier in your main hand. I am currently playing a human wizard with a thing for [Force] spells.

Could you elaborate on this sentence? “Note that I think his crotch should be about a the distance between his nose and hairline further up.”

I think his torso is too long in proportion to the rest of him. By lengthening his legs a little (raising the bottom of his pelvis) you can fix that. Either that, or he has REALLY baggy pants, and the pants need more folds to show how baggy they are.
