Picture Challenge: Character Portrait
Yay, I got the Scanner to work, so we have a picture with a WHITE back ground.

To get my subject I went to the wizards.com boards. They have an art section where occasionally some one will post a request. It’s almost a dead board, which is sad because there are some good artists, and a few of the requesters have neat ideas. I was torn between two requests; I went with this one because the guy asking for a changeling rogue was a little rude.

Now about the actual picture: I am so proud of it. I think it is the best I have done so far. Granted that isn’t saying much, but I still have warm fuzzies. The requester asked for back hair and black robes. OY! I didn’t realize what a pain that was going to be. Luckily I read Dominic Deegan and knew to make white lines in the solid black outfit. Those white lines are a lot harder to do than I thought.

The fabric actually has folds in it this time. I can’t take all the credit for the folds; I used a source picture in a catalogue to help me figure out where they should go.

I have a character for whom I need a portrait - an elf sidhe scholar, from Dragon Magazine class acts. (341, IIRC.) She's tall and thin, very pale with raven-black hair, and wears thin, flowing black robes. She carries a staff made out of three sticks twisted together with a crystal in the end. Her animal companion is a wolf, but I don't care much if it's in the picture. This is for a game I'm participating in, and possibly as an avatar on the Plothook boards.

Some descriptive words to keep in mind could be: mysterious, otherworldly, fey, ephemeral (figuratively speaking), and mystical. She can be in a static pose, perhaps in a woodland environment, or just on a blank background.

Thank you [very much] in advance!

Next weeks challenge is to make a journal icon to use for your Art Challenge posts.

How did you make the white lines? Did you just ink around them,or draw them over the black? If the latter, I really want to know what you're using.

I'm really impressed with your linework. Which may be strange to say, since you're not weighting your lines or doing any tricks. But I think you get a lot out of the general flow of your lines, so it looks almost intentional. Kinda Beardsleyesque, without the unnessecary baroque ornamentation.

Some suggestions on basic anatomy: while you can of course do whatever you want with non-human ears, most people base elf ears on humans. Human ears (mostly) align their top edge with eye, and the bottom edge with the mouth.

She doesn't look very female; I know that's hard to convey with loose billowy clothing. But there are still ways. Some very specific suggestions:

The legs are very close together, and the skirt wraps them in a very straight line. Women's legs widen as they go up, especially when seen pressed close together. This is because of the next thing:

Women have wider hips than men; more than that, women's hips are specifically wider than their waists. All but the very skinniest and very fattest women will have some obvious taper going on there (as opposed to breasts, which are assigned by a random fickle hateful god). You can highligh that difference with a belt or shading, but it's an easy way to make a chara shout "female!" at a monkey-brain level.

3. Cartooning cheat: this is largely bogus, but people expect women to look more delicate. This is easy to show around the hands and feet, not by making small hands and feet (don't do that!) but by narrowing the wrists and ankles in relation to the hands and feet. Don't be afraid to make hands and feet realistic! They're the most expressive parts of the body after the face, and playing with finger/foot shape is another easy way to indicate your character's persona.

Also: good heavens, I am gabby tonight.

Also also: I have no idea how to make an LJ icon.

I planed out where I wanted the white lines to be then inked it leaving the white part blank.

How does one “weight lines” and I would love to know some tricks?

I swear she had an hour glass figure before I colored in her outfit. I just couldn’t figure out how to keep her curves in the dress I drew.

When I drew her ear the right size it looked HUGE. I wanted the face to look long and angular but I have no idea how to draw long and angular. So she ended up with funky ears and a warped face.

I am extremely proud of her left foot. (The one on the right) I will keep the ankle/wrists thing in mind for the future.

As for the LJ icon, make a 2”x 2” picture that you think looks good as a logo for the picture challenge. Post it and call the challenge done. If you want to actually use it as an icon I wrote directions below.

<<<<<0>>>>>
Make sure your picture has been sized to 100 x 100 pixels. If you don’t have a program to do this I think Ruby and I both do.

Go to your live journal page while logged in. on the upper left you should see “post” click it.

Look for the word “profile” I think it will be on a blue bar. Mouse over it then click “Manage Userpics”

On this new screen you should see an “Upload a New Userpic” box with a Browse button some where on it. Click the browse button and a window will pop up.

Find the picture you want to upload on your computer using the window that popped up, then highlight it and click “open”. “Open” should be on the lower right of the window.

The window should close and there should now be text in the white box next to the browse button.

Click on the “proceed” button at the bottom of the “Upload a New Userpic” box.

The picture should now be uploaded to the livejournal sight and you should see it under the heading “Current Userpics.”

You can now choose to display this picture when you post blog entrees and comments. I don’t think the Icons show up on the blog main page, but they do show up on friends pages and comment pages.

Yay positive and negative space. The white lines are a good trick for doing black...another trick is to color it later and have "black" be some other color.

The transparent crystal is quite believable, and the staff has good detail, but I'm not sure how she's holding it up. Hands are one of the hardest things to get right (feet are the other) but it looks like she's leaning on the staff rather than holding it up. This illusion is also created by her feet not looking like they're standing on anything. Which fits the description, actually. Nevermind.

Neat dress, and yes, drawing from a reference automatically gets you 2 gold stars. A point about the ears...check your comic books...even a more "realistic" style like marvel uses will frequently shrink ears, or use any excuse to cover 'em up. With elves, their ears are gonna look big anyway...but check out the actual size and placement of your ears...they're lower, and larger than most people think.

Hiya! I'm "carnelianfire" on the WoC boards... and I was super excited to see someone else who likes to post their art in LJ-- Yay! I added you as a friend so I could see what you're up to from time to time.... cross-friending is not necessary and you won't hurt my feelings if you didn't friend me since I more-or-less babble and use my LJ for venting. *ducks*

I have been starting to post more art in LJ and tagging it. If you want to see some of my "stuff" you can view it here.

I feel you on the "I-Want-Everything-Black" deal.... such a pain in the backside to colour! The best thing to do is use a dark shade of grey. You can do shadows with a darker grey or black and hilight with a blue, white, or light grey.

I'd offer crit, but I wasn't asked to give it... and I try to keep my nose out of where it isn't wanted. Though I will say that you have improved quite a bit! Good job! =)

Critique me. Please, I need it. I need all the help I can get. But keep in mind I have no idea what I am doing so when you give tips, give them to me like I am a five year old.

I *JUST* realized that I'm drawing a picture for you! Haha. How crazy is that? I emailed it to you last night-- it's not completely cleaned up but I sent you what I had. Of course, there are little details to add here (that B-god's sign and the runes 'round your buddy's head)... I'm trying to finish right-quick, but who knows!

Anyway... constructive crit.

First and foremost-- don't be afraid to draw hands! They really, really suck at first, but they won't improve if you don't practice. Though, it does help if you draw people larger... hands are about as big as the face (remember that whole "if your hand is bigger" joke where you'd smack your friend's hand when they put their hand up to their face to check? Same idea in drawing with proportional hands.

A pose how you've drawn the hands is fine-- your wrists look really good too! However, it'd be a bit better if we can see some fingers either wrapped 'round the staff or hanging down on t'other side of the staff. =)

The ear you've drawn is also nicely done. You even got the lines on the inside of the ear-- Fabulous! Though, the position is slightly off. You have the correct position of the ear above the back of the jaw, but it's a little too high up. The bottom of the ear should be about level with the bottom of the nose. The difference in position is slight, but the change will make your art even stronger.

You have set up a very dynamic pose here, but there are a couple anatomy changes I'd suggest. Starting with the arms...
Shoot... the best way to show anatomy is to overlay it. I don't have much to work with here at work, but I'll try to toss something t'gether at lunch.

Thanks I appreciate it.

On hands. I think I am good at hands in bursts. If you look back to my first picture the guys hand holding the sword kicks ass. But his other hand is sad and misshapen.

I am better at thumbs than fingers.
