Art Challenge: Action Pose
I am really trying to incorporate the tips I get. I worked on hand scale, ear placement, fabric folds, and the nose. I think I met with varying degrees of success.

One of the many things I have been trying to work on is my falls back of the “static pose” where whoever I draw is facing full front with their arms at their sides. Or profile.

The thing is that non-static poses are really easier to draw, just like figures covered in fabric are actually more forgiving than nekkid folks. I swear! The illusion of movement can hide minor flaws of perspective that show up in static character design views. That may seem academic to you now, but I swear you'll notice it sooner or later.

This piece.. I like the pose, with falling/being knocked back by the magic missile backlash. I also like the battered feather in the cap. And the fact that the cap itself seems to actually sit on the wizard's head, instead of floating randomly about or turning into a skull clipping error. And the hand poses are lively and pretty accurate.

Things to consider: Feet are bigger than you tend to make them. They should, on average, be about half again the length of the hands. Here they're much too small, unless you're trying to draw him not just leaning back, but from a greatly foreshortened view from the top. Which would be gutsy of you, and if that's it let me know and I'll critiue accordingly. Standard 3/4, though, you needs some bigger feets.

I'm not sure if it's a conscious choice on your part (which would be valid, and don't let me kill your style, here) but so far your people have also exhibited some elongated torsos. Remember human torsos are a different length in motion than standing; when you curl or arch, your body will shorten accordingly, especially in the abdomen.

And... I was thinking something was wrong with the shoulders, here, but on closer inspection, I think they're actually pretty accurate, especially since the fabric of the shirt could well be hiding the the problem is the chest. The whole torso is curving in a single line, but human bodies aren't smooth. Breast and muscle tissue are optional and varied, but we all have ribs. Er. Unless we don't, which is a whole new nightmare. Draw that upper chest with a convex line, not concave, and I think you'll have something pretty solid, perspective-wise, with the chest and arms.

And a couple of general hopefully helpful tips:

Clothes drape with gravity, away from slopes, and against themselves. Basically this means that if you have bulges or ripples in one part of a garment, its roughly opposite side will have valleys. Folds behind the knee are balanced by tightness across the knee; folds along the torso will pull against the tightness on the shoulder. The more pronounced the fold, the more pronounced its balance. This is a broad generalization of course, but helps when going for dramatic drapery...or even plain ol' garment design.

Line Weighting: If you double the thinckness of the lines on the underside of the body, you should be able to see how it makes the figure feel heavier, and adds to his sense of backward motion. Even simple weighting can add a lot to a pose like this, with a clear line of action.

I think your progress in this is really clear, by the way. You're moving fast.

Very nice, dynamic pose...the magic missiles I would have done differently...maybe with more broken lines and more whispies coming off of each? I dunno, they bother me for some reason. The torso is a bit long, but the legs are perfect, and the entire effect comes across as a deliberate style thing. The hands have outstanding detail, but might be slightly small. I would put more wrinkles on the shirt, particularly around the shoulders, elbows, and bottom of the ribcage/bottom of the shirt area.

For what it’s worth the magic missiles bug me too. Darn the hands, I tried really hard this time.
