    linky goodness
It's stuff like this that makes webcomics worth reading for me. The best writers can create amazing tension for the audience to want to know what will happen next - without it feeling cheap, or dumb, or forced. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, go watch fushigi yuugi and it will become abundantly clear.)

Also, go here to see someone's extremely thorough re-imagining of an old, great NES game. Worlds of Power can fucking suck it, I want to see what this guy would have created.

    Pokémon Ranch
Who else is kind of dissapointed with the Pokémon Ranch for WiiWare? I wish there was more to do. I have about 400 different species in mine and I'm still sorely dissapointed with how boring it is... ugh! I do enjoy how all the Pokémon you get through mystery gift are sparkly tho. I have a Sparkly Magmortar, Electivire, Darkrai, and Deoxys. (oh yes, I went to Toys r us, and gamestop to get darkrai and deoxys.)

hahah I have no shame damnit. :P

    a hexagon of rest
So I've been reading up on polyphasic sleep. Train the body to enter REM sleep at once, instead of sinking into it over the course of 30-90 minutes. Apparently there are people who have been able to get by on 15-20 minutes of rem-sleep every four hours. I've read a couple of different blogs from people who pulled it off successfully, and their commentary is quite interesting.

Apparently the biggest problem with this method of resting isn't the sleep deprivation (which clears up in a week or two), it doesn't drive you stark raving mad or interfere with your ability to tell reality from fantasy or anything else like that.

No, the major thing they take note of is that the rest of the world doesn't do it. Living in a world where everyone else is asleep for a third of the time can apparently be quite odd.

Also, most human endeavors don't cooperate nicely with the on-220-minutes-off-20-minutes pattern. Imagine trying to meet up with some friends for dinner and a movie when your consciousness has been patterened this way. It's almost guaranteed that you'd have to nap both immediately before and immediately after, or once in between. A supportive peer group would make all the difference.

So the deal basically goes like this: Lose an hour or so from the waking, social world each day - in exchange, gain five or six hours of actual consciousness per day.

I want to do it. I have had the ability to schedule down pretty solidly for a long time now. I don't feel particularly attached to the human world. I believe I can easily fill the extra hours from three buckets - Internet, hygiene, self-improvement.

It's just a matter of will power. Not coincedentally, "will power" was a topic that one of those bloggers had a lot to say on.

    Song Summoner - My opinion.
So I bought Song Summoner for the iPod this afternoon and have had enough time with it to at least give my initial opinion. Since no one else has piped up I figured someone out there may want to hear it.

First off it should be noted that I am not an FF Tactics fan. I like the RPGs but the Tactics line has never done that much for me. What drew me to this game is I used to be a HUGE Monster Rancher fan and this is basically a very similar idea. You use a song in your library to create a pawn. These fall into the familiar jobs as Warrior, Monk, Archer, Mage and Knight. Based on what song you chose, it will effect the stats of the creature. You have NO say in any of this save for what song to use. You don't even get to name it, which would have been handy. With a total army of almost 100 pawns, it would be nice to be able to name them something that would remind you of what song you used. It comes into play further with the Groove Meter. See if you listen to the song you based a pawn on and he's in your active bench, you gain points. more points = stronger pawn. This becomes a problem when Celine Dion's All Coming Back To Me is the basis of your most powerful, A Class Monk. The only way he's gonna level is for me to put it on Repeat and go to bed...
The game play itself is exactly what you know from Tactics and the translation to iPod controls was an unfounded fear on my part. the controls could not work better. Everything is linear or circular so the wheel works prefect, almost as if it were designed for it (Yes I was being sarcastic). They really did simplify things and make it easy to knock out a battle in no time.

The story is pretty typical of Squinex, someone you love has been kidnapped, you are an all powerful Conductor (and didn't even know!) and have to create an army to save them.. yeah you know the rest. Explore, kill, level, lather, rinse, repeat.

To be a five dollar game on the iPod this thing is one of the better ones I have seen done. Sure there are a few small problems (Like why do we have to listen to Midi in-game music when it's already using our iTunes Library, can't it stream something? and the Naming thing. There's no way I can keep notes on that many units!), but they are far outweighed by the great graphics and intriguing gameplay.
And of course there is no shortage of the perverse thrill of "I just kicked your ass with a Westlife - 'You Raise Me Up' Archer!! BWahahahahaha!"

There is a game mechanic that I have not played with enough to determine if it's ok or if it pisses me off. Each unit has a Deployment rating. It can only be used in a battle that many times. So units are meant to be disposable. You can replenish them over time but they really make it seem like something you'll want to save for one or two Special units. Everyone else is a stat holder and completely expendable. It depends on HOW hard it is to keep units alive and battle ready as to how badly this affects gameplay. But as an RPG'er I know I tend to build a connection to my party and don't relish the though of retiring someone because they have been in 10 battles..

If you have an ipod, like FF Tactics or Monster Rancher, this is worth the $5. I'm enjoying it.

Be warned, if your iPod library is in shambles, the games interface is NOT going to make it any easier to find the song you want. My library has been hosed since I upgraded to Vista and I never have corrected it completely. I may have to put time into it to do so...

I think we all saw this coming
so, Final Fantasy XIII is coming to the 360. unsurprising, also, is that it is NOT coming to the 360 in Japan. (because the five Japanese people who own a 360 don't own a PS3?)

FFXIII vs. and all that other nonsense is still single platform at this time. I have a feeling that MS offered Squeenix more money than they could possibly turn down, and that this is going to put a serious dent into Sony. (because the fence sitters with 360s already aren't going to hop aboard if MGS didn't do it for them.)

we certainly live in interesting times.

    Coming Out
I've been a gaymer since birth. From my first addiction to Ms. Pacman at age 4 to playing Dragon warrior and Final Fantasy when they first came out for the NES, from playing Magic in my dorm room or DnD in my basement. It's a huge part of who I am, both socially, professionally and personally. Right now, I am pretty hardcore into WoW and raid three nights a week. And for a single guy who's usually broke who has broke friends who can;t ever afford to go out, raiding isn;t such a bad thing.

So, I met a great guy back in March. This is the first guy I have been so intensely physically, sexually and emotinally attracted to in a long time. But, he doesn't know that I play WoW or that I'm a gaymer in any capacity, and I'm kind of afraid to tell him. He's alot more socially active than I am. Where I'm cool staying home watching a movie or raiding, he would rather go out to a movie or a bar or a club. I like going out, don;t get me wrong, but I like staying in, too. And I have a great time when I go out with him. The problem is he has no frame of reference for anything nerdy/geeky/fantasy/sci-fi. I'm scared to death I'll come out as a gaymer and he'll be too weirded out to ever see me again.

There have been a few times when he's asked me to go out and I've had to make up excuses because I already had plans for raids.
    "What are you doing tonight?"
"Just hanging out with some friends."
    "Oh, where you guys going?"
"Not sure yet, but I'll probably head home around midnight."

One of my raids was supposed to end at 11 one night ran late. I told my guy I'd meet him at 11:30, but when 11:45 rolled around and I was still in raid, I told him I had to stop for gas, got off the wrong highway exit and forgot my wallet at home. I felt like a fool, and I'm sure he thought I was one, too. But I just don't know how to bring this up without totally weirding the guy out.

I'm pretty sure if I told him outright, "Hey, can't come out tonight. Playing video games instead," he'd tell me to get my ass over to the bar asap. I'm not ashamed of who I am at all, but it's so hard to explain what it means to be a gaymer to someone who has absolutely no frame of reference or interest for it.

    So, any thought?

    the consequences of work sucking
Here is one of the large questions politics asks us.

    "Which is better?

    1. A population that includes a bunch of people starving to death in the streets and in some cases turning to crime to survive
    2. A population that includes a bunch of loathsome social parasites with appalling entitlement complexes"

One way to read this question is as an ethical inquiry to the intrinsic value of human life. I think no one would argue with me when I say that a hardworking, productive member of society is intrinsically more valuable than the examples described in items 1 and 2 above.

But which is actually worse? A spoiled-rotten fat idiot, or a skinny criminal who can't eat unless he steals? They're both bad, but which do we prefer?

Make no mistake, we do have to choose one of those. The third alternative is having both at the same time.

What's that you say? Fix the educational system and make a fourth option where people can actually provide for themselves? Sure. I'd love to see you do it.

Cooking mama brings me culinary shame
I am not a bad food geek... Instant noodles are something I keep for emergencies only. I love cooking, and make something for dinner each night from scratch because I really enjoy it. I'm told I'm a great cook by others. Hell, I've made Croquembouche, and Turkish Delight, and I've even made a couple of pretty rockin' pastries! I'm not imcompetant in the kitchen and food challenges do not scare me.

But. Cooking Mama shows me how much I have to learn. The first few were ok, then it got hard. Apparently, I can make a real Coq Au Vin, and I've made successful Turducken's not once but twice, but I can't peel a digital carrot.

    I am ashamed -_-

So, the movie-like experience of the first Max Payne game has been made into, well, a movie. Coming up this October:

Having enjoyed the game, I'm looking forward to this adaptation. The trailer showed that it has the film noir elements just right, and the action pieces didn't stray from how it was set in the gameplay.

    RPGs oddity
I've been playing Persona 3: FES for a while now. This game is completely rocking my world. I love the fact that it encompasses dungeon crawl with monster-breeding game-play mechanics. The main objective of this game is to "discover personae" -- the personality aspects you summon into battle to help you fight. How do you discover Persona? You do this by either capturing them after battle by drawing a tarot card, or you merge multiple persona together to get a stronger offspring.

Keep in mind, the Persona games belong to the Shin Megami Tensei universe, so there are references to biblical angels and demons, as well as other supernatural beings from other cultures as well. These games also have a snarky sense of humor. There is one part of the game in which the main character is almost seduced by a cross-dresser on a beach. See the grainy picture below! Hilarity ensues.

    Spicy
    Beautiful "lady?" "Spicy" indeed.

The other big game-play mechanic in P3: FES is building your "social links." You do this by interacting with characters throughout your day. Of course, one of the social links is the "Hermit." To build this social link, you have to play a MMORPG (in game) and seduce one of your teachers through that game. Throughout this social link, your teacher bitches about her co-workers. It is quite amusing.

    Then quit!

In other RPG news, I bought the Sega Genesis Collection compilation disk. I paid around $11, and, much to my glee, it comes with Phantasy Star II, III, and IV. This disk also has a surprisingly large amount of good Genesis non-rpg titles. I just want to say that $11 for the three PS games is worth the admission price alone. If you can find it, you would be doing yourself a favor by playing these jewels. The reason I am so happy this compilation is only $11 is because I had my mom pay for Phantasy Star IV for my birthday when it came out. At that time that game was $83! My mom was pissed. There are a few stinkers on this compilation. If I had to assign a letter grade, I would give this compilation a B- or C+.

    Enjoy (the nostalgia!)
